Diapers and wipes are the biggest repeat expense in a baby’s first year. Buying the right sizes at the right time, and in sensible quantities, can save thousands of rupees. This guide covers diapering basics and a month-by-month list of what to buy.

How many diapers will you use?

Age Approx. per day Typical size
0–1 month 8–12 Newborn (NB)
1–4 months 8–10 Small (S)
4–8 months 6–8 Medium (M)
8–12 months 5–7 Large (L) / pant style

Sizes vary by brand and by baby’s weight; check the weight range on the pack, not just the age.

Cloth vs disposable: an honest comparison

  • Disposable: convenient, very absorbent, good for nights and travel; higher ongoing cost and waste.
  • Modern cloth nappies: lower long-term cost, less waste, gentle on skin; need daily washing and drying, which is harder in monsoon.
  • Many Indian families mix: cloth or langot at home in the day, disposables at night and outdoors.

Preventing diaper rash

  1. Change promptly, especially after poo.
  2. Clean with water and cotton or unscented wipes; pat dry.
  3. Give diaper-free time daily on a waterproof mat.
  4. Use a zinc-oxide barrier cream.
  5. See your doctor if the rash is bright red, blistered, or lasts more than a few days.

Money-saving tips

  • Buy bulk packs during big sales on FirstCry, Amazon.in and Flipkart, but only one size ahead.
  • Compare price per diaper, not per pack.
  • Ask friends for outgrown clothes; buy new only for safety items.
  • Unopened diaper packs in a size baby outgrew can often be exchanged; check the store’s policy.

FAQs

When do babies move to pant diapers?

Usually when they start rolling and crawling, around 6–9 months, because they are easier to change on a wriggling baby.

How many wipes do we need?

Roughly one pack of 72 every few days in the early months. Cotton and warm water work well at home.

Are diapers bad for baby’s skin in Indian heat?

Not if changed frequently with diaper-free time. Choose breathable diapers and cotton clothes.
